ONLINE COVER Sensors in Soft 3D Scaffolds. The sensory systems of living organisms are able to detect myriad stimuli across their bodies. In contrast, robotic sensors are typically limited to specific areas of a robot and perceive one type of stimulus. Xu et al. created a platform, called optical lace, to construct arbitrary 3D grids of soft, stretchable light guides for spatially discontinuous deformation sensing. Devices composed of optical lace reliably and repeatedly sensed external and internal deformations.
